High above the Okanagan Valley, at elevations stretching up to 680 metres, is Garnet Valley Ranch Winery, a remarkable estate that embodies the future of sustainable winemaking. Spanning 320 acres, this certified organic property seamlessly integrates vineyards, fields of lavender, vegetable gardens, and wildlife habitat into a singular vision of harmony with nature. Located on the back roads of Summerland, BC, Garnet Valley Ranch is a testament to how innovation and tradition can coexist.
The ranch was discovered in 2012 and has since been a hub for regenerative organic farming. Under the stewardship of Okanagan Crush Pad, Garnet Valley Ranch has become a beacon for biodiversity and sustainability. More than two-thirds of the estate is left in its natural state, with vineyards carefully planted in “islands” surrounded by native habitats. This design supports local wildlife and ensures the ecosystem thrives.
Leading the Charge: Canada’s First IWCA Member
A core feature of the property is its commitment to sustainability. Garnet Valley Ranch (under the Okanagan Crush Pad umbrella) is a member of International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), making it the first Canadian winery to join this esteemed initiative. By utilizing solar energy, reducing packaging waste, and planting biodiversity-friendly crops, the winery sets a global example for climate-conscious viticulture.
From Soil to Glass: Cool-Climate Wines That Shine
The wines produced here reflect the cool-climate terroir and the precision farming techniques championed by consulting terroir specialist Dr. Pedro Parra. With a focus on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and traditional method sparkling wines, Garnet Valley Ranch uses minimal intervention in the cellar. Concrete fermentation tanks and amphorae allow the pure character of the fruit to shine, free from additives or manipulation.
The Outlook: A Tasting Experience with a View
Visitors to Garnet Valley Ranch are treated to an intimate tasting experience. The Outlook, a tasting room and visitor centre, provides panoramic views of the untouched landscape, offering a glimpse into what the Okanagan Valley looked like a century ago. Guided tours reveal the ranch’s dedication to organic farming and sustainability, while wine tastings showcase the exquisite results of this ethos. Tours run from mid-June to mid-September by reservation, ensuring a personal and educational visit.
More Than a Winery: A Haven for Nature & Future Generations
The estate’s vibrant lavender fields, buzzing bee farm, and restored pond highlight its role as a haven for wildlife. These features complement its reputation as a leader in regenerative agriculture. Garnet Valley Ranch is more than a winery; it is a living example of how the land can be nurtured for future generations.
