Prepare to have the familiar unstitched before your eyes – a hypnotic collision of theatre and cinema! From April 24 to 26, the Vancouver Playhouse hosts Diptych (The missing door and The lost room), an extraordinary production by Belgian company Peeping Tom, renowned for obliterating the traditional lines between theatre, dance, and cinema. For those in search of an evening that defies convention and lingers in the imagination, this is a performance that demands your attention.
At the heart of Peeping Tom’s artistic signature is a surreal, cinematic style—where hyperrealism collides with dream logic. Co-artistic directors Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier orchestrate a disorienting theatrical experience that plunges audiences into shifting landscapes of fear, longing, and subconscious desire. With an aesthetic rooted in real-world settings, they use the illusionistic tools of film—jumps in time, perspective shifts, and mood ruptures—to fracture the narrative, making what is seen feel both familiar and uncanny.
Carrizo and Chartier bring decades of experience and an instinct for the unexpected. Carrizo, originally from Argentina, began dancing at the age of ten, joining Córdoba’s University Ballet before relocating to Europe at nineteen. Her choreographic voice emerged early and powerfully, eventually leading her to create The missing door in 2013 for the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater. Chartier, who began his training at Rosella Hightower in Cannes, forged his career through performances with Göteborg Opera, Opéra de Paris, and the iconic Rosas. His 2015 work, The lost room, earned the “Swan Most Impressive Production” award the following year. Together, they offer a vision that is emotionally raw, visually stunning, and intellectually provocative.
Rather than following a clear plot, Diptych invites audiences into a liminal realm where time is elastic and truth is elusive. The works draw upon an unconscious vocabulary—the imagery of dreams, the logic of memory, and the haunting pull of unresolved trauma. Within these evocative worlds, characters appear and vanish, spaces transform, and moments fracture as if viewed through a broken lens. The result is both a meditation and a mystery, a theatre experience that leaves the audience questioning what they saw and how it made them feel.
Peeping Tom does not aim to explain or reassure. Instead, the company challenges viewers to surrender to the unknown, to witness the collapse of order and the emergence of something more primal. Their work is not easily categorized, but it is utterly absorbing.
For those who appreciate boundary-pushing art, Diptych is not merely a performance—it is an invitation to rethink what performance can be. Each evening begins with a pre-show talk at 7:15 p.m., offering insight into the creative process. Friday’s show concludes with a post-performance social in the Salon, a chance to reflect and connect over what promises to be one of the most unforgettable productions of the season.
April 24–26, 2025 | 8:00 p.m.
Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamilton Street
Running time: 70 minutes (including intermission)
Let Peeping Tom draw you into a beautifully fractured world, where the line between reality and illusion disappears.
