On a beautiful spring evening in downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver Art Gallery welcomed hundreds of art lovers, culture seekers, and night owls for its much-anticipated annual Art Party. The 2025 edition did not disappoint and staff transformed the iconic gallery into a multisensory playground—alive with music, performance, and immersive experiences. A celebration of creativity in all its forms, the event once again proved why it remains a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar.
The night began with early access at 7:30 PM for Gallery members, who enjoyed first glimpses of the exhibitions and exclusive interactions in a more intimate setting. By 8:00 PM, the doors swung open to standard ticket holders, who were greeted by the building’s electric energy and the sound of music pulsing through the floors.
Inside, every level of the Gallery offered something unexpected. On the fourth floor, Room 4East hosted the LEGO Lounge—a whimsical, hands-on creative space co-hosted by Vancouver’s Community for Adult Fans of LEGO and celebrated artist Douglas Coupland. Nearby, guests marvelled at Paul Hetherington’s intricate LEGO renderings of iconic West Coast Modern architecture, a playful yet masterful nod to regional design history.
Up on the Rooftop Pavilion, ‘ephemeral objects’ delivered a dynamic DJ/VJ set that had the crowd swaying. With drinks in hand and the city skyline as a backdrop, partygoers danced late into the evening, soaking in the energy of the open-air venue until last call at 11:00 PM.
On the first floor, the Rotunda came alive with two showings of Town Choir by Theatre Replacement. Performers captured real-time observations and transformed them into choral declarations—raw, humorous, and emotionally resonant. Outside, the same performance unfolded at the Robson Street entrance, drawing in passersby and adding a theatrical spark to the city’s streetscape.
Throughout the exhibition spaces, guests explored the Gallery’s latest shows. Written in Clay: From the John David Lawrence Collection offered a deep dive into British Columbia’s rich studio pottery tradition, elevated by a live durational ceramic performance from Wei Cheng, whose mesmerizing process captivated onlookers throughout the evening.
Simultaneously, the unveiling of Otani Workshop: Monsters in My Head introduced attendees to the wild, imaginative world of Japanese contemporary ceramics, full of playful abstraction and bold form.
Adding to the layered experience was a new 1:1 Artists Select installation curated by Douglas Coupland, who handpicked works from the Gallery’s collection to create an insightful, unexpected dialogue with the surrounding exhibitions.
From spontaneous dance performances by Eric Cheung to the playful intersections of music and art, Art Party Spring 2025 was a night of joyful exploration and collective creativity—an invitation to experience the Gallery in an entirely new way.
