Nestled on the traditional lands of the Lekwungen speaking peoples, amidst a sprawling 565-acre estate surrounded by old forests and panoramic ocean vistas, Hatley Park offers a storybook setting for couples seeking a wedding of unparalleled grandeur. Blending historic sophistication with modern luxury, this iconic landmark is one of the most unique wedding venues in Western Canada. From its cinematic allure to its breathtaking gardens, Hatley Park transforms every celebration into an unforgettable chapter in your love story.

A Castle Built for Dreams
At its centre, Hatley Castle is a beacon of timeless romance, capturing the hearts of those who dream of a wedding steeped in history, beauty and luxury.
Hatley Castle’s origins trace back to 1908, when James and Laura Dunsmuir envisioned a residence of extraordinary elegance. Designed by acclaimed architect Samuel Maclure, the castle embodies Gothic Revival architecture in the spirit of early 20th century mansions. At the time it was built, it was the largest private residence on the West Coast.
Shortly after Laura’s death in 1937, the Department of National Defence purchased Hatley Park and transformed the grounds and castle into a “ship on land” to train junior naval officers during WWII. This storied tradition continued with the establishment of the Royal Roads Military College until its closure in 1995. Its successor, Royal Roads University, opened as a public university the same year and continues to steward the property. The university is committed to sustainability, reconciliation, equity, diversity and inclusion.

A Grand Entrance to Forever
Every journey at Hatley Castle begins with an arrival worthy of royalty. The porte-cochère, an elegant carriage porch, welcomes guests into a world of opulence. Medieval busts flank the entrance, while intricate stone carvings feature James Dunsmuir’s initials surrounded by Scottish thistles, offer a nod to the estate’s heritage. Impressive double oak doors with brass handles shaped like rampart lions complement the whimsy of the bronze angel doorbell beckoning guests in.
Inside, the castle’s Elizabethan-inspired grand hall enchants with its vaulted ceilings, half-panelled plaster walls, and hand-carved oak beams. A rose-hued sandstone fireplace radiates warmth, while pointed arches accentuate the intricate banisters and minstrel gallery. This is a space designed to awe and inspire against a backdrop of timeless grandeur.
Hatley Castle’s first floor is a realm of sophistication, perfect for intimate ceremonies and grand receptions. The 1,200-square-foot drawing room, with its soaring 16-foot ceilings and twin black marble fireplaces, offers a luminous space for toasts and celebrations. French doors open to a sunlit terrace, revealing sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains and Pacific Ocean.

Cinematic Allure and Prestige
As you walk the grounds of Hatley Park, you may feel as though you have stepped into a cinematic masterpiece—and with good reason. This legendary estate has graced the silver screen in films and series such as X-Men, Deadpool, Disney’s Descendants and Smallville, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to its storied legacy. For people drawn to the magic of the movies, Hatley Castle offers a setting as captivating as any blockbuster romance.
