The Bard is back, and the 2025 Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival promises to dazzle Vancouver audiences once again with four dynamic productions set against the stunning backdrop of Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park. From June through September, theatre lovers can immerse themselves in comedy, drama, and reimagined classics—all while enjoying the fresh sea air and vibrant energy that defines this West Coast cultural tradition.
A CELEBRATION OF SHAKESPEARE AND BEYOND
The 2025 season features two productions on the BMO Mainstage and two inside the intimate Douglas Campbell Theatre. Each one offers a bold and distinctive take on the Bard’s work or his world, appealing to both seasoned theatregoers and first-time audience members. According to Bard Founding Artistic Director Christopher Gaze, “Whether you are a committed Shakespeare fan or have never been to the theatre before, we are confident you will find something to delight and inspire you.”
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
On the BMO Mainstage, the season opens with Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Johnna Wright. This beloved comedy sets the stage for witty banter, tangled affections, and a sharp-tongued battle of the sexes. In a town emerging from the shadows of war, Beatrice and Benedick engage in a sparkling war of words while the young lovers Claudio and Hero face unexpected trials. With romance, deception, and some of Shakespeare’s most iconic dialogue, this production brings timeless themes to life with renewed passion.
THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA
Also on the BMO Mainstage is The Two Gentlemen of Verona, helmed by director Dean Paul Gibson and given a nostalgic twist with an exuberant 1980s setting. Expect big hair, bigger emotions, and a synth-heavy soundtrack as friends Valentine and Proteus navigate the chaos of love and loyalty in the pursuit of Silvia. The show even includes the Bard’s only canine character, Crab—portrayed by a real dog—for a bit of four-legged scene-stealing charm.
THE COMPLETE WORKS (abridged) [revised] [again]
Over in the Douglas Campbell Theatre, audiences can buckle up for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] [again]. This globally acclaimed comedy features just three actors who tear through Shakespeare’s entire catalogue—yes, all of it—with outrageous speed and irreverent wit. Directed by Mark Chavez, this Bard-on-a-rollercoaster mashup is guaranteed to elicit laughter from purists and sceptics alike.
THE DARK LADY
Rounding out the season is The Dark Lady, a new Canadian work by Jessica B. Hill that shifts the spotlight to Emilia Bassano—the possible muse of Shakespeare’s infamous sonnets. Directed by Moya O’Connell, this compelling story explores the intersection of power, poetry, and passion between two literary giants. With sharp dialogue and a provocative narrative, it challenges audiences to consider who gets remembered in history—and why.
TICKETS, SUPPORT, AND SPONSORS
Tickets for the 2025 Bard on the Beach season are now available, with flexible options for individual shows and multi-play packages. The Festival continues to thrive thanks to generous support from sponsors and donors, including BMO as returning Mainstage sponsor, and Production Sponsors Lawson Lundell LLP, Odlum Brown, Polygon Homes, and the Jarislowsky Foundation.
Whether you come for the laughter, the drama, or the sunset views, Bard on the Beach 2025 is shaping up to be a season that celebrates both legacy and innovation. Secure your seats, and prepare to fall in love with Shakespeare all over again.
