Standing at the altar inside The Vancouver Club’s Georgian Room — the fireplace behind them framed in cobalt and white blooms — Gavin and Wendy had arrived at a moment that had been building for longer than either of them could have anticipated.
It had started in high school, with a crossing of paths so brief and ordinary that neither could have known what it contained. Then came the summer of 2012, a reunion, and the recognition that the years in between had settled nothing — except the certainty of what came next. On September 26, 2022 — the exact date of their tenth anniversary — they stood together in that Georgian Room and made it permanent.
A DECADE, MARKED
Choosing their tenth anniversary as the wedding date was not sentimentality for its own sake. It was precision — the only date that carried the full weight of what was being celebrated. Thirty guests made the journey to be with them: close family and long-time friends, most of them local, and several who travelled from Calgary, Toronto, and as far as China to take their place in the room. With a guest list this considered, everyone present had a genuine claim to the couple’s story, and they knew it.
THE GEORGIAN ROOM
The Vancouver Club, one of the city’s most distinguished private institutions, carries within its walls an architectural dignity that no event space can manufacture. Its historic wooden details, plaster ceilings, and measured proportions offered Gavin and Wendy something beyond mere elegance — a setting calibrated for exactly this occasion. The Georgian Room, where both the signing ceremony and the luncheon reception unfolded, provided an environment of complete, unhurried refinement. For a celebration built around sincerity and ten years of shared history, it was the only possible choice.
青花瓷: THE WORLD THEY BUILT
The design concept arrived with a name that carried centuries of cultural weight: 青花瓷 — the classical Chinese blue-and-white porcelain tradition, reimagined within a historic western venue. The palette was cobalt and crisp white, running through every surface from the florals to the stationery, with smooth porcelain textures set against the warm wood and plaster of the room. Liting Chan, who designed the entire ceremony scene and layout for the couple, brought the vision to life with a precision that left Gavin and Wendy speechless when they first stepped inside and saw it fully realized.
The florals, designed and executed by Paradise Events, were composed of blue and white delphinium, scabiosa, stock, rose, and dahlia — chosen as much for their movement and texture as for their colour. The fireplace installation served as the ceremonial altar, framed in blooms and commanding the room from its position at the head of the aisle. Custom stationery, welcome signs, a bespoke seat cushion, and every detail on the signing table were individually tailored to carry the porcelain motif throughout, so that no surface existed in isolation from the whole. It was an environment of total coherence.
BEFORE THE DOORS OPENED
Before the ceremony began, before any guest had taken their seat, Gavin and Wendy shared a moment that belonged entirely to themselves. Seated back-to-back, hands held between them, they read aloud the love letters they had written for each other — words composed in private and spoken now, without eye contact, in a space of complete vulnerability and complete trust. It was intimacy that does not require an audience — expressed quietly in joined hands and the sound of one voice reading to another.
DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION
Wendy arrived in a gown by Pronovias, sourced through Bisou Bridal — a design that moved between eras with complete assurance. The vintage-inspired puff shoulders and long sleeves honoured the historic dignity of the venue, while the open back and mermaid silhouette gave the look a contemporary authority that was impossible to overlook. On her feet, Dior slingback heels; at her ears, Hermès. No detail was unconsidered, and there were no wardrobe changes — she wore this look from the first moment to the last, and it asked for nothing more.
Gavin wore a tailored suit from Debonair Formal Wear — precise, well-chosen, and entirely in keeping with the occasion. Together, they were coordinated without being identical, each complete within a shared aesthetic that reflected the care with which every other element of the day had been assembled.
THE DOORS OPEN
The Georgian Room was full, the flowers were at their height, and then the grand double doors swung open. Wendy stood in the light at the far end of the aisle — and for a room already composed and waiting, it was the moment that undid everyone. The walk that followed carried ten years of shared history down an aisle of cobalt and white blooms toward the man waiting at the other end of it. Those who were present describe it as the most intimate moment of the day, and that is a high measure, given everything that followed.
VOWS AT THE FIREPLACE
The ceremony reached its emotional apex at the flower-framed fireplace altar, where Gavin and Wendy read their handwritten vows aloud to each other. Standing hand in hand, they spoke their promises in a room that had gone very still. Those who had travelled from across the country and across the world to witness this moment felt the full force of what was being said. Every word had been earned, and the room understood that.
HIGH TEA AND REUNION
Once the ceremony concluded and the afternoon opened into reception, the atmosphere shifted — joyfully and completely. The luncheon and high tea that followed carried the warmth of a long-awaited gathering, which, for many of the guests, it precisely was. Harpist Elisa provided a continuous musical thread throughout, the live sound grounding the celebration in something graceful and unhurried. Momo Chen Cakes delivered a wedding cake of refined artistry, its presence on the table both centrepiece and punctuation to a meal shared among people who had known the couple for years. A guest list drawn this deliberately has a particular effect on a room — the post-ceremony cocktail hour became a reunion of real depth, full of laughter and shared memory, an afternoon that contracted around the people in it and made the outside world feel very far away.
PRODUCED WITH PRECISION
Executing a celebration of this specificity within a compressed timeline required production discipline that does not announce itself but is felt in every detail. Sourcing antique porcelain China to carry the theme through the table settings was among the most logistically demanding elements of the day, and it was achieved without visible effort — which is, of course, the point. Paradise Events, responsible for planning, decor, and floral design from first concept to final flower, produced an environment in which cultural heritage and contemporary elegance existed in complete alignment. To bring the full porcelain world to life inside a landmark heritage room, on a tight timeline and to an exacting aesthetic standard, is an achievement that reveals itself in the couple’s speechless reaction when they first stepped into the completed Georgian Room.

Gavin and Wendy are married. The antique porcelain has been returned, the delphinium pressed, and the handwritten letters folded away somewhere safe. But the Georgian Room at The Vancouver Club holds the memory of the afternoon those double doors swung open — and so do the thirty people who were standing in it.
