Angela Hewitt is more than a virtuoso pianist—she is a global force in classical music, revered for her artistry, intellect, and unmistakable interpretations. Her profound connection to the works of J.S. Bach has earned her a distinctive place among the most celebrated musicians of our time. In 2020, she became the first woman to receive the City of Leipzig Bach Medal—an extraordinary recognition from the heart of the composer’s legacy.
With a repertoire that spans centuries and styles, Hewitt performs internationally as both soloist and conductor, bringing elegance and depth to concert halls across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

THE POWER OF PRESENCE
Most recently, Angela took centre stage at The Power of Music, the Vancouver Symphony Gala presented by Connor, Clark & Lunn Private Capital. Her performance captivated a sold-out audience, combining technical brilliance with emotional nuance. The evening’s proceeds support the VSO & the VSO School of Music’s exceptional music education and outreach programs, that empower youth and aspiring artists as well as building community engagement that provides free and accessible programming for all.
Reflecting on the concert, Manuel Bernaschek of Showcase Pianos shared: “Angela Hewitt is renowned for her exceptional technique, deep musicality, and expressive interpretations. Her interpretations of Mozart tonight were incredible as she combined a keen sense of phrasing with a distinctive rhythmic vitality. When paired with a high-quality instrument like the Fazioli F278 Concert Grand piano, her artistry is further elevated, creating a truly memorable concert experience.”

LEADING WITH GRACE
Hewitt is known for conducting from the piano, leading world-class orchestras with a refined touch and singular vision. She has collaborated with the Toronto and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras, Lucerne Festival Strings, Salzburg Camerata, Hong Kong and Copenhagen Philharmonics, and the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra in the revered Musikverein.
This season, she performs across Italy, Finland, Poland, Estonia, and Switzerland, including a UK tour with Kammerorchester Basel and an engagement with Royal Northern Sinfonia in North East England.
A GLOBAL RECITALIST
Equally celebrated as a soloist, Hewitt continues to perform recitals in iconic venues around the world. From Boston and Baltimore to Rome, Zurich, and Copenhagen, her concerts are immersive, transcendent experiences. As artist-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall, she launched the Bach Odyssey in 2016—a twelve-recital exploration of Bach’s complete keyboard works, performed over six years across cities including New York, Ottawa, Tokyo, and Florence.

RECORDINGS THAT RESONATE
Angela’s award-winning recordings for Hyperion Records have become benchmarks in classical music. Her complete cycle of Bach’s major keyboard works has been hailed as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times). Her discography extends to Couperin, Rameau, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and more.
In 2022, she began recording the complete Mozart sonatas, with the second volume released in 2023. Her catalogue, now globally available on major streaming platforms, includes celebrated albums such as the Goldberg Variations and the UK chart-topping Love Songs. A regular presence on the Billboard classical chart, her contributions to the genre are immeasurable. In 2015, she was inducted into Gramophone Magazine’s Hall of Fame.
THE MAKING OF A VIRTUOSO
Angela Hewitt’s musical journey began in Ottawa, born into a musical family and performing publicly by the age of four. She studied with Jean-Paul Sévilla at the University of Ottawa and rose to international acclaim after winning the 1985 Toronto International Bach Piano Competition.
Her accolades include the Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Order of Canada (as a Companion—one of only 165 living Canadians to hold the title), and an OBE from Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She holds seven honorary doctorates, is a Fellow of Peterhouse College, Cambridge, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
CREATING SPACE FOR MUSIC
Angela Hewitt divides her time between London, Ottawa, and Umbria, Italy—where she founded the Trasimeno Music Festival nearly two decades ago. Held each summer in historic venues around Lake Trasimeno, the festival brings together celebrated artists and devoted audiences for a week of unforgettable performances.
