Bates’s journey began in Vancouver, Canada, but his path led him to the world’s fashion capital, Milano, where he studied at the prestigious Istituto Marangoni, a global centre for fashion and design. Milano, with its deep roots in Italian sartorial tradition, now serves as home to his design studio, where Bates creates collections that blend classic aesthetics with modern sophistication.

His dedication to timeless style, eye for intricate detail, and daring use of colour have solidified him as an industry leader, admired for his thoughtful, expertly crafted pieces.

The Christopher Bates brand embodies his personal values and commitment to making a meaningful impact through fashion. With every piece he designs, Bates creates lasting staples that speak to the individuality of those who wear them. Drawing inspiration from fields as varied as anatomy, architecture, and art, Bates infuses each collection with a versatile beauty that balances function with elegance.

Bates’s talents and contributions have not gone unnoticed. Among numerous accolades, he has received the Canadian Menswear Designer of the Year Award from the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) in 2019 and the Visionary Award from Fashion Group International in 2018.

His reputation for excellence led to a partnership with Air Canada, where Bates designed the airline’s new uniforms, which received international praise for their sophisticated style and earned awards from both the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors and the Professional Clothing Awards in London.

Bates’s designs have also been embraced by a diverse array of prominent figures, from actors like Michael Shannon and John Boyega to F1 drivers like Charles Leclerc and musicians like Shawn Mendes. Leading publications, including L’Uomo Vogue Italia, GQ Brazil, Forbes, and Women’s Wear Daily, regularly feature his work, further reinforcing Bates’s influence in the world of high fashion.

As Bates himself says, “I moved back to Milano in September of this year, and I’m thrilled to be based here again. It’s actually my third time living here, so it’s a homecoming of sorts.” His plans now include an ambitious international expansion beginning with his first flagship store in Milano, scheduled to open in Spring 2025. This flagship is a full-circle moment for Bates, an opportunity to plant roots in the city where he first studied design — a dream realized.

For Bates, Milano is more than just a strategic base; it is a city that inspires him personally and professionally. “I love living in a city that lives and breathes fashion and in a country with such a rich cultural heritage and diverse talents,” he explains. “Living here is constantly inspiring and stimulating… Italians truly excel.”

Milano’s role as a centre for fabric, production, materials, and eyewear tradeshows means Bates can closely oversee his materials, ensuring the quality that has become synonymous with his brand.

Following the opening of his Milano store, Bates is preparing to open additional locations in Dubai, New Delhi, and Mumbai. This expansion marks an exciting new chapter as his brand branches out to include women’s footwear and fragrances. He is also expanding his range of accessories, including sunglasses, scarves, and accessories such as belts, bags, wallets, and cardholders.

Even as Bates embarks on this international journey, his menswear business continues to thrive in Canada and the United States, with new boutiques joining his roster for the coming spring. Though he admits he has never been busier, Bates is exhilarated by this growth, excited to bring his designs and his vision to an ever-wider audience. In every way, Christopher Bates remains deeply committed to the people who wear his clothes, making them look and feel their very best.
