As Depeche Mode crooned in one of their most iconic tracks, Enjoy the Silence, there comes a moment after a whirlwind of holiday soirées when one must embrace stillness—and, in this case, elevate it with a truly luxurious tie knot. This first week of 2025, Alex Krasny’s Floating Spiral Knot offers a stylish antidote to the chaos, pairing exquisitely with a vintage Bill Blass suit. The knot’s artistry is beautifully captured in this Agree or Die tutorial, which I highly recommend exploring.

The Floating Spiral Knot is a bold, big-end masterpiece. It contrasts sharply with the little-end knots I have leaned towards lately. For those ready to try this dapper style, here is how to tie it:

Step-by-Step Guide: The Floating Spiral Knot

1. Set the Stage: Start with the wide end of your tie on your right, leaving it long. The narrow end should rest on your left, its tip hanging midway between your neck and navel.

2. Begin the Spiral: Drape the wide end over the narrow end and pull it to the right. Repeat this motion a second time, ensuring each wrap sits cleanly atop the previous one. Avoid overlapping; precision is everything.

3. The Third Wrap: Complete a third wrap, but keep this one slightly loose—it will form the base of the knot. Hold the tail of the narrow end securely to prevent the entire knot from unravelling.

4. Form the Base: Feed the narrow end up and over to your left. This creates the foundation of the three-spiral structure, which must remain intact as you continue.

5. Secure the Wide End: Pass the wide end underneath and over the central knot, as if tying an Onassis knot. Now, loop the wide end through the third spiral, the loose one you created earlier.

6. Final Adjustments: Once through, adjust the knot to avoid any bunching. The Floating Spiral Knot is all about balance and clean lines, so take a moment to perfect its presentation.

This knot is a statement piece, best paired with textured fabrics or unconventional patterns. While it is surprisingly easy to tie, its charm lies in the strong, sculptural base you build to showcase the wide end’s elegance.
