On the edge of Yaletown, Desi Indian Lounge has quietly established itself as a compelling new destination for brunch in downtown Vancouver. This recent opening marks the next chapter for founder Deepak Khanchi, whose journey from a farming family in India to building beloved restaurants in British Columbia is reflected in every detail of the experience.
For this brunch visit, we were joined by novelist and journalist Jess Singh of UrbanAsian.com, whose perspective added another layer of thoughtful conversation to an already engaging experience. We enjoyed this visit because it felt intentional from the moment we arrived. This was not simply a new restaurant opening, but an extension of a story shaped by community, care, and a deep respect for culinary heritage.

A Founder’s Vision, Rooted in Tradition and Growth
Deepak Khanchi arrived in Canada in 2012 at just 18 years old, bringing with him values grounded in hard work, hospitality, and connection. In 2017, he transformed his passion into reality with the opening of Desi Turka Indian Cuisine in Burnaby, which quickly became a local favourite for its authentic flavours and welcoming atmosphere.
Desi Indian Lounge builds on that success, offering a more contemporary dining experience while preserving the heart of Indian cuisine. We felt that balance immediately. Tradition is honoured, but the setting, service, and presentation reflect a modern Vancouver sensibility that suits a relaxed brunch just as naturally as an evening gathering.
Warm Welcomes and Culinary Confidence
We were greeted by General Manager Deepa Thapa, whose background in luxury hospitality, including over eight years with Marriott Hotels in Dubai, was evident in the seamless and attentive service. The experience felt polished yet warm, with a genuine sense of care that set the tone for the meal.
In the kitchen, Executive Chef Bal Ajagaonkar brings a depth of experience shaped by his upbringing in the coastal town of Malvan in western India and refined through years in five-star hotel kitchens alongside celebrated chefs. What stood out to us most was his ability to translate those influences into plant-based dishes that felt both comforting and quietly surprising.
An Ambiance Designed for Lingering
The interior at Desi Indian Lounge strikes a thoughtful balance between visual interest and comfort. Beautifully complementary wallpaper patterns add character without overwhelming the space, while a dual mirror selfie wall introduces a playful, contemporary edge. Comfy chairs invite guests to settle in, which we appreciated for a brunch experience meant to be savoured rather than rushed.
We enjoyed this space because it felt cozy yet elevated, creating an environment that encourages conversation and return visits.
A Brunch-Ready Menu with Depth and Flexibility

Our experience began with a series of appetizers presented by Chef Bal that immediately set the tone. Gobi Manchurian arrived crisp and flavourful, with cauliflower florets coated in a well-balanced Manchurian sauce. The Samosa Kale Chaat layered chickpeas, chutneys, crispy kale, crunchy sev, and pomegranate seeds into a dish that delivered brightness, texture, and contrast.

One dish created for us became an immediate favourite: the Stuffed Vada. Pillowy and delicate, it was served with subtle dabs of spicy mayo and delivered a satisfying contrast between its crisp exterior and soft, flavourful interior. We enjoyed this because the gentle heat built slowly, leaving a warm, lingering finish that felt comforting and indulgent without being heavy.

Shortly after, an additional plate arrived – stuffed mushrooms, filled with a medley of seasoned vegetables, delivered intense, layered flavours, and a gentle heat that followed gave a distinctly comforting, inside glow that lingered in the best way.

As the meal progressed, Jackfruit Pulao and Baingan Bharta took centre stage. The tandoor-roasted eggplant carried a gentle smokiness, paired with spices, pickled onion, tomatoes, and coriander. Traditional roti and Amritsari Kulcha, crisp and generously filled with spiced potatoes and herbs, arrived alongside steamed rice, grounding the table in comfort.

The absolute standout, however, was the Soya Butter Masala. Soya filets simmered in a tomato coconut sauce delivered richness, balance, and depth that impressed us enough to place it firmly among our top dishes of 2025.

Thoughtful Menu Details and Beverage Pairings
We appreciated that the menu is clearly marked to indicate dishes containing nuts, dairy-free options, and those with gluten. The kitchen is also open to accommodating vegan requests within reason, which adds ease and confidence for brunch gatherings with varied dietary needs.
While we opted for black tea during our visit, the bar offers an array of signature cocktails, refreshing mocktails, and a curated selection of wines and beers. From a Mango Lassi Martini to classic Indian-inspired cocktails, the beverage program adds another layer of versatility to the brunch experience.
A Dessert That Rewrote Expectations

Chef Bal and Jess Singh with the Foxtail Millet Pudding.
Dessert introduced us to something entirely new: Foxtail Millet Pudding. Nutty foxtail millet was cooked in rich coconut milk, gently sweetened with jaggery, and infused with aromatic cardamom and a subtle hint of rose water. We enjoyed this because it felt familiar yet elevated. The closest comparison might be rice pudding, but this version was far more satisfying, with a deeper texture and warmth that lingered well beyond the final spoonful.
Why We Would Return for Brunch
We enjoyed Desi Indian Lounge because it offers more than flavour. From thoughtful hospitality to a kitchen that balances tradition with creativity, every element works together to create an experience that feels genuine and inviting. For those exploring brunch in downtown Vancouver and seeking a plant-based–friendly destination rooted in culinary heritage, this Yaletown-adjacent lounge is one we would confidently recommend.
This is a place where tradition meets modern dining, and where brunch feels both comforting and quietly exciting.
