When it comes to men’s fashion, clichés abound. They say men prefer to bury their heads in the sand, oblivious to what they wear. In Vancouver, that often manifests as an overreliance on rain gear or yoga pants. While practicality has its place, the truly stylish understand that dressing well reflects not only on their taste but also their character.

Looking sharp does not require a devotion to fleeting trends or fast fashion. With a little effort and attention to detail, you can achieve a luxurious, timeless aesthetic without excess. This week, we highlight the limited-edition Seigo Katsuragawa tie, tied in the Ostrich Knot—a playful and bold choice for the discerning.

Tying the Ostrich Knot

The Ostrich Knot (tutorial above by Patrick Novotny) is a “little end” knot, which means the narrow end of the tie does the heavy lifting. Here is how to master it:

1. Position Your Tie: Start with the wide end resting at your navel.

2. Begin the Knot: Loop the narrow end over the wide end, creating a wrap near your neck.

3. Create the Structure: Make two loops around the centre of your knot. Then, bring the narrow end over the middle and to the opposite side, forming a central loop.

4. Final Touches: Feed the narrow end through the loop you just created and tuck it neatly along your neck. The final knot should appear asymmetrical, resembling the neck of an ostrich—a striking detail that adds personality to your look.

Style with Purpose

The Ostrich Knot, like conscious fashion choices, is a reminder that a little effort goes a long way. Building a wardrobe of well-made basics, like a versatile turtleneck or a tailored blazer, provides endless options for both casual and formal occasions. When paired thoughtfully, these timeless staples help you avoid the trap of fast fashion, reduce your environmental impact, and stay effortlessly stylish.

For example, a simple turtleneck transforms when paired with a blazer and slacks for a polished look or with dark jeans, boots, and a bomber jacket for something more relaxed. The key is to focus on quality over quantity—classic pieces never go out of style.

The Seigo Katsuragawa Tie

For this week’s look, I chose a tie from Seigo Katsuragawa, a rare gem in the world of artisanal neckwear. Made from Kyoto silk and meticulously hand-sewn in Tokyo, each tie is a limited edition—only eight are crafted in any design. This exclusivity makes the brand both eco-friendly and luxurious, an ideal choice for the modern man who values craftsmanship and sustainability.

Known as “Seigo Neckwear” in New York, the brand has a modest presence, but true connoisseurs recognize the artistry instantly. With prices starting at $85, it offers an accessible entry point into high-end neckwear without sacrificing quality or individuality. I am wearing #6 in the series—a piece that feels as unique as it looks.

Taking the time to tie a distinctive knot, like the Ostrich, or to invest in artisanal pieces from brands like Seigo Katsuragawa, shows a commitment to personal style. It is not about standing out for the sake of it but about making thoughtful choices that align with your values and aesthetics.
