Springtime in Vancouver is made for evenings like this.
Vancouver Opera is closing its 2025–2026 season with five performances of Giacomo Puccini‘s beloved La Bohème at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and the buzz is entirely justified — it is already the fastest-selling show in Vancouver Opera‘s history, on pace to sell out all five nights. When a production moves this quickly, it tends to mean something.

A Story That Has Never Stopped Resonating
Set in the bohemian Latin Quarter of Paris, La Bohème follows a circle of young artists navigating love, creativity, and survival on very little of either. At its core is the tender, heartbreaking romance between the poet Rodolfo and the ailing seamstress Mimì — a story so quietly devastating it directly inspired RENT, and has moved audiences continuously since its 1896 premiere. Puccini‘s score is lush, immediate, and impossible to shake. The sweeping arias, intimate duets, and vivid orchestration hit differently when you are hearing them live.

An Exceptional Cast Across Five Performances
This production assembles a remarkable principal ensemble. Jonelle Sills performs as Mimì on April 25, April 30, and May 2, with Lucia Cesaroni taking the role on April 26 and May 3. Matthew White performs as Rodolfo on April 25, April 30, and May 2, with Zachary Rioux stepping in on April 26 and May 3. Gregory Dahl brings depth and warmth to Marcello, Lara Ciekiewicz commands the stage as Musetta, Alex Halliday plays Colline, Justin Welsh takes on Schaunard, and Thomas Goerz rounds out the cast as Benoit and Alcindoro. They are joined by members of the Vancouver Opera Chorus. Music Director Emeritus Maestro Jonathan Darlington conducts, with Brenna Corner directing.
The Best Possible Introduction to Opera
For anyone curious about opera but unsure where to begin, La Bohème is the one. It is emotionally accessible, dramatically compelling, and the kind of evening that converts even the most reluctant first-timer. Closing sponsor Montecristo Jewellers returns as season sponsor, adding another layer of prestige to an already landmark production.
Performances run April 25 through May 3 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 630 Hamilton Street, Vancouver.
