With the Paris Olympics wrapping up soon after providing shocks, record-breaking performances and a light tinge of football hooliganism, we wondered: what if there were a Whisky Olympics? Who would be the Tom Daley, Michael Johnson or Ian Thorpe of the Whisky world? What sports would they even participate in?

To explore this ‘spirited’ idea, we spoke with Daniel Ufland from The Whisky Masters about some of the best Whiskies from countries participating in the Games. Daniel pits these hooch champions against each other to determine which whisky reigns supreme in this international showdown and which of the Games they would excel in.

Canada’s entry into the Whisky Olympics would have to be Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, a creamy Canadian rye whisky with a 90% rye content. First introduced in 2015, Northern Harvest has gained popularity due to its candy-like sweetness and soft character, which is coloured with butterscotch, spiced vanilla, orchard fruits, and gentle notes of pepper. This elegant profile mirrors the grace of figure skating.

Daniel notes: “Crown Royal is a true icon of Canadian whisky. The Northern Harvest Rye’s slick and refined profile makes it an excellent choice for representing Canada.”

Scotland: Glenfiddich 12 Year Old – Archery

Scotland’s entry for team GB would be Glenfiddich 12 Year Old, a benchmark in the single malt category. Glenfiddich 12 is celebrated for its freshness and hints of butterscotch, apples, and pears. Its smooth, mellow character and consistent quality have earned it a beloved spot among whisky enthusiasts, akin to the eagle-eyed focus needed in archery.

Daniel notes: “Glenfiddich is famously synonymous with Scotch whisky. Its approachable flavour profile makes it an ideal ambassador for Scotland.”

Japan: Hibiki 21 Year Old – Synchronized Swimming

For Japan, Daniel highlights Suntory Hibiki 21 Year Old, a prestigious and highly acclaimed blend. This whisky features a complex profile with cherry, oak and smoke notes. Hibiki 21 Year Old is a testament to the art of Japanese blending and has received numerous accolades, reflecting the inspiringly beautiful harmony of synchronized swimming.

Daniel notes: “Hibiki 21 Year Old is a masterpiece of Japanese whisky blending. Its rich flavour profile represents the bespoke craftsmanship of Suntory’s whisky-making tradition, making it an elite ambassador for Japan.”

Redbreast 12 Year Old is a standout in the Irish whiskey category. Known for its full-bodied flavour profile with notes of honey, ginger and licorice, Redbreast packs quite the punch, much like the power and finesse seen in boxing.

Daniel notes: “Redbreast 12 is a fantastic example of Irish pot still whiskey. Just be careful around it; otherwise, it’ll knock you out!”

Big in body and richness, it’s India’s Amrut Fusion. This powerhouse whisky combines Indian and Scottish barley, creating a unique flavour profile with pepper, mango, and peach notes. Amrut Fusion has garnered international acclaim for its bold and distinctive character, much like the strength and intensity required in weightlifting.

Daniel notes: “Amrut Fusion is a remarkable example of Indian whisky innovation. Its unique blend of barley types delivers a memorable flavour experience.”

United States: Buffalo Trace Bourbon – Decathlon

Team USA boasts a massive roster of whiskies, but Buffalo Trace Bourbon would be Daniel’s top pick. Known for its flavour profile, which includes hints of toffee, caramel and mint, Buffalo Trace has earned high praise and numerous awards worldwide. Its smooth yet robust character makes it a standout choice, much like the versatility and endurance required in something like a decathlon.

Daniel signs off by saying, “Imagining the Whisky Olympics, it’s evident that each country contributes its distinct flavours and traditions to the global stage. From the bold kick of the USA’s Buffalo Trace Bourbon to the intricate complexity of Japan’s Hibiki 21 Year Old, these whiskies showcase a rich tapestry of global craftsmanship.

Through these exceptional spirits, we celebrate the heritage and innovation of each nation. So as we move into fall, take some time to sample some of the world’s finest whiskies!
